ART

At Jack Hunt Academy, we want our art curriculum to embody the school’s mission statement- ensuring all our students are: well-educated, of good character; and ready for ambitious next steps.

Art and Design at Jack Hunt Academy encompasses a broad and balanced curriculum that explores both knowledge and skills and exploration of a wide range of artists and art movements from many different cultures and periods of time. The curriculum also develops students’ use of a range of media, giving them confidence in their own artistic expression and creativity, as well as developing their understanding of art in the world that exists around us.

All Key Stage 3 students cover two main classwork projects over the course of a year. They are also assessed at the beginning and the end of the year, and they are set two homework projects which tie in with the GCSE and A Level assessment objectives, A01 Artist Reference and A03 Observational Studies. Students can choose to explore Fine Art or Graphic Communication at GCSE level, and we also offer A Level Fine Art.

We have an ambitious curriculum that encourages all students to manage both homework and coursework load, equipping students for next steps  (e.g. University or Apprenticeship). Students explore media such as drawing, painting, 3D study and digital media. Alongside this students have the opportunity to see art in situ, in real life gallery contexts during art trips. At the end of the academic year , we celebrate the achievements of students in an end of year exhibition, allowing students to experience exhibiting their own work.

AIMS OF THE CURRICULUM AREA

Through the provision of interesting stimuli, and the opportunity to learn and practice creative skills using a wide range of materials and equipment, we aim to give students the confidence and ability to express their personal ideas through the production of both two and three dimensional items of Art.

TEACHING METHODS

In Years 7 to 9 all members of a class work from common starting points, using a range of equipment and materials in order to develop skills. However students take part as individuals within the class and personal interpretation of ideas is encouraged.

RESOURCES

The department is well resourced with a wide range of Art and Design materials and equipment. The department has a suite of computers that are used for research and for Graphic design projects. There are three main Art rooms and a specialist room for photography.

key stage 3 curriculum outline

• Students gain experience and skills in Art and Design through participating in set projects in Years 7 to 9. Care is taken to ensure that projects are designed so that all students regardless of ability can take part at their own level.

• Projects ensure that by the end of Year 9, students will have worked in both two and three dimensions, using a range of media: painting and drawing, printing, digital media, and ceramics. Students will also be made aware of the work of well-known artists and designers as a part of every project.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
